Are weekends your nemesis when it comes to your health goals? Does your social calendar lead to one too many adult beverages, lengthy binge-watching sessions from the couch, or skipping your weekly trip to the grocery store? The problem is, the domino effect of those choices can leave you feeling behind and unprepared by the time Monday morning rolls around. Thankfully, weekend self-care rituals can help you stay focused on your goals so you don’t undo the progress you made earlier in the week.
Here are 5 weekend self-care activities to give you a head start on the week ahead:
Make Flavored Water
You probably already know that staying hydrated is critical for good health, but if water isn’t your favorite beverage, try adding some natural flavorings. Homemade flavored waters are inexpensive compared to bottled products at the supermarket, and you’ll being doing your part to keep plastic out of the local landfill.
If you have concerns about the health of your municipal water source, consider purchasing a water filter. I have the Imperial Big Berkey* model and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! It sits right on my counter and serves as a visual reminder to drink more water throughout the day.
Here are a few simple ingredients that can give your glass of water a makeover:
- Lemon / Lime
Pick one area to tidy up: a drawer, closet, corner of a room, table, bookshelf, cabinet, or even the refrigerator.
Clutter is a thief. It steals your time, energy, and focus. Mindful organizing is a leisurely weekend self-care activity that can bring more ease to the week ahead.
If you’re concerned you might go overboard with a reorganizing project (I’ve been there!), set a timer and make plans to come back later so you don’t lose your entire weekend.
Plan Your Menu for the Week
If it’s not already on your list, add menu planning to your weekend self-care rotation. Planning ahead for meals can save a lot to time during the busy week. Honestly, I’ve never met anyone who loves standing in front of the refrigerator at 7 PM trying to come up dinner options when they’re exhausted. Have you? Knowing in advance what you’ll be preparing for dinner can make your evening routines much easier. If you need some help with menu ideas, check out this healthy real food list.
The book How to Hug a Porcupine* offers guidance for dealing with the prickly people in your life who push all your buttons. And, the truth is, all people (even porcupines) need and deserve love. Sometimes the best response is compassion, and resisting the urge to push back can bring positive results. Physical touch is more powerful than you might think. Give extra hugs this weekend to show the people you care about how much you appreciate having them in your life.
Take a Walk
Taking a simple walk outside can do wonders to boost your mood and lift your spirits. But if you can’t get outside due to the weather, find creative ways to move your body indoors. I used a treadmill workstation for years, and I loved being able to write while I walked.
