I often refer to my self-care plan as a suitcase. That's because I've learned that being prepared is essential when life gets messy. Having a solid self-care plan to fall back on is not only comforting on an emotional level, but it also makes it easier to roll with unexpected changes and continue moving forward.
Creating a personalized self-care plan is a lot like packing for a trip: The better you are at predicting what you might need along the way, the more enjoyable the adventure.
Imagine for a minute that you’re packing your suitcase for an upcoming trip. Maybe it’s to a remote tropical island with your partner. Maybe it’s to a solo getaway retreat in the mountains. Wherever you’re going, you’ll have to carefully consider all the things you might need while you’re away from home. You’ll need to consider the weather, what kinds of activities you might do, and what supplies you might need on any given day.
But what if instead of mindfully packing for your trip, you just randomly tossed items into your suitcase instead? While that might be kind of fun in a weird sort of way, it’s unlikely that you'll have what you need when you get to your destination.
And you'll probably end up with a lot of unnecessary anxiety and expenses as a result.
Practicing self-care is a lot like packing a suitcase.

Chances are, you're already doing a lot of things really well when it comes to self-care. But what if you were able to find a few new strategies that made your life better? What if by adding a few things to your suitcase -- or taking a few things out -- your life felt even easier?
The cool thing about self-care is that many strategies aren’t things at all, they’re practices. So, even if your luggage happens to get lost in the shuffle you'll still have access to strategies like meditation or walks in nature or deep breathing exercises to fall back on. In fact, many of the best self-care strategies don’t even fit into a suitcase.
If you need some new self-care strategies, download this list of over 300+ activity ideas here.
And remember: Self-care is personal. What you might choose to pack in your suitcase will probably be very different than what someone else packs in theirs. And that's okay. Your suitcase is going to be filled with things YOU need, so don’t worry about what anyone else has in theirs.
