Healthy Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

As a registered dietitian who has worked in healthcare for nearly two decades, I’ve tested out countless nutrition and fitness products, and here are some of my favorites. The Vitamix* is still one of my all-time favorite kitchen appliances. I’ve owned my share of blenders and other similar appliances over the years, but this by far outperforms them all. With the Vitamix, you can make hot drinks, soups, smoothies, and even ice cream. Granted, this little gem is pricey, but so far it’s been worth every dime. Before buying one, I asked around to see what others had experienced and the responses were overwhelmingly positive. I opted for the 6300 model but there’s a newer 6500 model* available now. (I love that you can just press a soup button and the machine shuts itself down when it’s finished. That saves a lot of time hovering and watching the clock waiting to shut it off manually.) I also purchased the separate dry grains container*, which has been a fantastic addition for milling whole grains. This little add-on is great for moms who love to bake or follow a gluten-free diet.

Fitbits* aren’t new, but they are pretty remarkable at helping boost motivation and accountability. Walking is the most popular physical activity, and it’s been shown time and time again to be one of the best weight loss strategies. According to the National Weight Control Registry, research has shown that “94% (of those who successfully lost weight) increased their physical activity, with the most frequently reported form of activity being walking.” But even if mom isn’t super high-tech, you can always opt for a simple pedometer.

Everyone knows that safe drinking water is critical for good health, and as concerns over the quality of municipal water supplies rise, having a good water filtration system is a simple solution. I especially like that the Big Berkey filters out pathogens and harmful chemicals, while preserving minerals. The smaller 1.5 gallon system* fits under most kitchen cabinets, making it easier to store, but I opted for the larger 4.5 gallon system* because I use it to make coffee and ice cubes as well. And since the filters are fairly slow, it’s nice to have extra water on-hand so you don’t have to wait.

Instant Pot

Even if your mom doesn’t love to cook, the Instant Pot is perfect when you’re short on time (or patience) when it comes to family meal prep. I’ve personally owned both the 3-quart and 6-quart Instant Pots and they are equally lovely. The 6-quart size* is a better choice when there are more than two people in the household (or if you want leftovers), and the 3-quart size* is perfect for one or two people. Even with the smaller pot, I’ve been able to cook a whole (smallish) chicken, but there isn’t much room to spare.

I don’t know about you, but my favorite part of the day is sinking into clean, soft sheets and falling into a restful slumber. Getting enough sleep is one of the most important things we can do to support our well-being. And besides, sheets are one of those things no one really enjoys buying for themselves. These are truly the softest sheets* I’ve ever owned — and the price is hard to beat!
