Self-Care Challenge (Day 107): Hugging Pets

On day 107 of my 366-day self-care challenge, I lifted my spirits by hugging my pets. (Chickens, specifically.)

There are crazy cat ladies, and then there are crazy chicken ladies. I fall into the latter category.

I’ve written about my chickens many times in the past, and that’s because they bring me a great deal of joy. My husband and I often refer to them as “the girls,” or “the broads” or “the damn chickens,” but honestly, those ladies are far more entertaining than most people, honestly.

They make me laugh when I’m taking myself too seriously. They remind me that the world is much bigger (and complicated) than I am. And they teach me that if we can simply allow ourselves to be who we are, we’ll be a lot happier.

They funny thing about chickens is that they are content just mulling around. They aren’t trying to achieve anything other than surviving another day (and eating some tasty treats). I’ve gotten to know and love each of their unique personalities over the years and it’s hard not to want to hug them.

Hugging our critters just feels good. And if smiling and laughing aren’t considered self-care, then I don’t know what is.
