Self-Care Challenge (Day 224): Weighing Pros and Cons

On day 224 of my 366-day self-care challenge, I weight pros and cons.

Have you ever been faced with a decision that was so complex that it made your brain hurt?

That happened to me yesterday.

I’ve been trying to make a decision that has required many hours of research and product comparisons, and I’m absolutely exhausted. Yesterday alone, I spent 15 hours reading product reviews, watching demos and creating list of pros and cons to make sense of all the details.

Any time we invest a significant amount of time or money, it pays off to do some research.

Weighing the pros and cons – whether it’s to make a purchase, decide whether to take an action, or to make a life change, the process takes focus, time, energy and concentration. To be honest, I didn’t even realize so much time had gone by until the day had nearly melted away completely. How’s that for being in a state of flow?

So, why do I consider weighing pros and cons an act of self-care? Because taking the time to evaluate our options helps us make better decisions in the long run. It prevents the stress and anxiety that often come with unexpected consequences. And we avoid making rash decisions that aren’t at all aligned with our core values.

Viewing benefits and risks side-by-side often leads us to an obvious choice. Things just look clearer on paper. My trusty Excel spreadsheet almost always gives it to me straight. Seeing the data in black and white removes the emotions that often guide our decisions.

I certainly can’t tell you how deep you should dive into weighing your options. It depends on your comfort level and risk tolerance. But for me, the riskier the decision, the more time I spend researching.
