Self-Care Challenge (Day 238): Eating Sushi

On day 238 of my 366-day self-care challenge, I ate sushi for dinner.

It wasn’t until after I turned 30 that I tried my first bite of raw fish. If you’re cringing just reading this, I felt that way once too.

Growing up in the Midwest, my exposure to foods that didn’t include beef and potatoes was limited. But when I moved to Florida, my world opened up a bit. By the time I was a teenager, I had tried most of the local fish and shellfish, and when I reached college I further explored some of the stranger creatures of the sea, including octopus.

But still no sushi.

As a dietetic student, I was vigilant about proper food handling and cooking temperatures. Raw anything scared me, not to mention that sushi doesn’t exactly fit a college student’s budget. But somehow when I entered my 3rd decade, I was curious. I wondered what it tasted like, why other people liked it so much, and if I would perhaps like it too.

Since that time, I’ve eaten so much sushi that I can’t even tell you what my first experience was like; I don’t remember it.

All I know is that some of the most amazing meals I’ve experienced in my life have included sushi. Every bite has its own distinct flavor profile and texture, and there are endless combinations.

Is sushi safe to eat? Certainly, there are some risks, and higher-risk groups, like pregnant women and those who have compromised immune systems, do need to examine those risks more carefully. I include sushi, along with a variety of other foods, as part of my self-care practice as a way to avoid overly-repetitious menus, but I don’t eat it often.
