What is Lifestyle Design?

While Tim Ferriss may be known for coining the term “Lifestyle Design” in his book The 4-Hour Workweek*, his definition isn’t the only one that exists.

The 4-Hour Workweek focuses primarily on strategies for creating a passive income, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But lifestyle design is about much more than earning money.

In fact, some have criticized Ferriss’ perspective on lifestyle design. One Medium author, for example, went as far as saying it “offends the living shit” out of him. But regardless of your take on his idea of lifestyle design, one thing is certain: you don’t need the approval of anyone to create a life you love.

At Living Upp we see Lifestyle Design a little differently. We see it as the process of getting clear about how you want to experience your life and then creating the conditions to manifest it. And that requires a few important essentials, not least of which is a self-care plan.

So, whether or not you choose to create a form of passive income, the process of lifestyle design includes regularly assessing your life circumstances, prioritizing your needs and desires, envisioning your ideals, planning, committing, and enlisting strategies that move you toward manifesting your goals.

Self-Care is a Powerful Lifestyle Tool

It’s probably not surprising that self-care lies at the heart of lifestyle design. In order to achieve our goals, we need to be operating at our best.

A comprehensive, 8-dimensional self-care plan is a powerful tool. When you pour all of your energy into just one or two areas of your life, it usually means you’re neglecting other important areas. And that can have can a negative impact on your overall well-being. Here’s an overview of Living Upp’s 8-Dimensional Self-Care Framework to help you cover all your bases and develop a supportive foundation:8 Dimensions of Self-Care

Systemic: How you eat, move and rest
Emotive: How you express ourselves
Luminescent: How you illuminate your inner truth
Financial: How you allocate our resources
Cognitive: How you think
Aptitudinal: How you contribute to the world
Relational: How you connect with others
Environmental: How you harmonize with nature

HINT: The first letter of each dimension spells the word “SELF-CARE.”

How you choose to design your life depends on your unique personality, beliefs, values, strengths, and interests. Your best lifestyle will support your greatest needs, not someone else’s. And it should leave you feeling confident and capable. If it doesn’t, it’s probably time to revise your plan.
