March Self-Care

Here are 6 March self-care activities to explore this month:

1. Change Your Air Filters

How often do you change the cabin air filters in your car? Or how about the ones in your home? If you battle seasonal allergies or have a respiratory condition, it’s probably a good idea to create a schedule to change your air filters on a regular basis.

2. Schedule Your Tax Preparation

Whether you hire someone to prepare your taxes or plan to do them yourself, make sure you have a deadline marked on your calendar. Many CPA’s fill up early in the season, so even if you don’t have your files together yet it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment. Last minute rushing is a recipe for unnecessary stress and anxiety.

3. Start Spring Cleaning

While the weather is still less than ideal in many parts of the country, it’s a great time to get a head start on spring cleaning. Tackle the garage or a spare room and start sorting, donating, and organizing. Remember to find a safe disposal location for items like Styrofoam, batteries, fluorescent lights and expired medications.

4. Create an Emergency Menu

There are many reasons to have emergency food supplies on hand. Inclement weather conditions, such as hurricanes and blizzards, can make it challenging to get to the grocery store.  Likewise, flu season can linger into April and May, which means having a 3- to 7-day supply of non-perishable foods and sick day supplies on-the-ready is essential. As a registered dietitian with 20+ years of experience in healthcare, I know a lot about emergency menu planning.

5. Prepare for Sunshine

March is a great time to start thinking about summer activities, especially if your spring break plans include travel to a sunny destination. Make sure you have sufficient supplies of sunscreen, hats and SPF clothing to protect your skin from the sun’s harsh rays.

6. Update Your Fitness Plan

Is your fitness motivation waning from what it was at the beginning of the year? Maybe your workouts need a makeover. Varying your fitness routine regularly can help you maintain motivation and keep you moving toward your goals.
